The U.S. House of Representatives has supported the "MEGOBAR Act." The bill, titled the "Mobilizing and Enhancing Georgia’s Options for Building Accountability, Resilience, and Independence Act" (MEGOBARI), was backed by 349 members of Congress, while 42 voted against it.
The bill must now be approved by the U.S. Senate.
For reference, the "MEGOBARI Act" was introduced in the House of Representatives last year by Congressman Joe Wilson. This year, it was reintroduced in the 119th Congress by Congressman Steve Cohen [Democratic Party], along with Congressman Richard Hudson [Republican Party] and Congressman Marc Veasey [Democratic Party].
According to the congressmen, the "MEGOBARI Act" expresses support for the Georgian people and, among other provisions, includes sanctions against Georgian officials for human rights violations and for undermining democracy.
